1. We tell you what the law actually allows, not what sells
Missouri has no state roofing licence. None. Anybody with a truck and a ladder can print cards and call themselves a contractor here, and after a storm the size of the one that came through in April, hundreds of them do. What Missouri does have is RSMo 407.725, which makes it illegal for a roofer to pay or rebate your deductible, illegal to advertise that they will, and illegal for them to negotiate your insurance claim on your behalf. Half the storm crews working Greene County right now are advertising at least one of those things. We document the damage properly, we meet your adjuster on the roof, we write a line-item scope, and you deal with your insurer. It is less exciting than "we handle everything" and it is the part that is legal.
2. The inspection is real work, not a sales visit
A proper hail inspection takes 40 minutes to an hour and produces something you keep: chalked test squares on each slope, close photographs of bruising with a scale in frame, shots of the soft metal, gutter and flue-cap denting, and an attic look at the decking underside where we can get to it. If there is nothing there we say so. We have talked more people out of filing a claim since May than we have talked into one, mostly in Nixa and south Springfield where the hail was an inch and the damage is usually cosmetic.
3. You can check us before you let us on the property
Missouri will not vouch for us, but the City of Springfield will. Pull up the city’s business licence search or ring the licence office on 417-864-1617 and confirm the licence, the insurance and the bonding before you sign anything, with us or with anyone else. Ask for the certificate of liability too. We will email it the same day. Any roofer who gets prickly about that question has answered it.

The supercell split as it came into Barry County, peaked over Aurora, and tracked north-northeast straight across northwest Springfield, dropping severe hail for two hours and twenty minutes. Hail collected at the weather office in northwest Springfield still measured four inches after thirty minutes of melting.

Read the times as well as the sizes. The giant hail came through between about 11:20 and noon along the Aurora to Republic to Willard to northwest Springfield line. Nixa and Ozark got clipped by a separate, much weaker cell around a quarter to two, and the difference between a 4.00 inch report and a 1.00 inch report is the difference between a total loss and a roof that is probably fine. That single fact explains most of the "why did my neighbour get a roof and I did not" arguments happening in this county right now.

Storm & hail damage roof repair
Shingles look fine from the ground and your gutters are covered in dents? That combination is the classic hail signature, and it is why the ground-level look fools people. We inspect for bruising with chalked test squares, photograph everything with a scale in frame, and give you a damage report you can hand to an adjuster whether or not you use us for the work.
Since the end of April this has been most of what we do. Northwest Springfield, Willard, Republic and Bois D’Arc are largely replacement territory. Nixa, Ozark and the south side mostly are not, and we will say so.
Roof replacement & tear-off
When patching stops being honest, the roof comes off. Full tear-off to the deck, decking inspected sheet by sheet and replaced where it is soft, ice-and-water shield at eaves and valleys, synthetic underlayment, new flashings and boots rather than reused ones, then the roof and the ridge vent. A typical Springfield house is a day and a half.

Roof repair & leak tracing
A brown ring on the ceiling almost never sits under the hole that made it. So we do the part that is legal and, frankly, the part that decides claims anyway: a proper photographic damage report, a line-item scope written in the same format your adjuster works in, and one of us on the roof when the adjuster is on the roof.

Metal roofing & standing seam
People ask about metal after every hail season and the honest answer has two halves. A standing seam roof with concealed clips will outlive three asphalt roofs and shrug off the 1.5 inch hail that ruins shingles. It will also dent in four inch hail, and those dents are cosmetic rather than functional, which is exactly the argument you will end up having with an adjuster.
Standing seam on a 2,000 square foot house is $16,000 to $24,000 here. Exposed-fastener panel is a fraction of that and belongs on shops, barns and porches rather than on the front of your house.
Flat & low-slope roof repair
Ponding water that is still there 48 hours after the rain is telling you something about the slope, not the membrane. Flat roofs are not only a commercial problem here: half the mid-century additions and sunrooms in Rountree and Phelps Grove have low-slope sections tied into a pitched main roof, and that junction is where they leak.
Gutters, soffit & fascia
The dented gutters that proved your hail claim usually need replacing too, and the insurer often pays for them in the same scope. Seamless aluminium run on site, oversized downspouts where the roof area justifies it, plus the soffit and fascia work that gets exposed once the old stuff comes down. Blocked soffit vents are also the quiet reason a lot of Springfield attics run hot, so we check them while we are there.
Roof ventilation & underlayment
An attic at 150 degrees in July ages shingles from underneath and voids more warranties than any storm does. Balanced intake at the soffit and exhaust at the ridge is the fix, and it is usually a few hundred dollars on a job that is already happening. This is also where underlayment lives: synthetic across the field, ice-and-water at eaves, valleys and around every penetration, because that membrane is what actually keeps water out on the day a shingle fails.
Cedar shake & slate roofing
There is real slate and real cedar on the older streets around Drury and in parts of Rountree, and both need somebody who has worked on them before. We repair and replace both, and we install synthetic slate and composite shake for owners who want the look with a Class 4 impact rating and a quarter of the weight. On a hundred-year-old roof the first conversation is always whether the structure will still carry the original material.
Roof maintenance & coatings
Cheap, boring, and the reason some roofs get 22 years instead of 15. An annual look catches lifted flashing, failing sealant at penetrations, debris dams in valleys and the early granule loss that tells you the clock has started. On commercial low-slope we do silicone and acrylic coating restoration, which can buy a serviceable membrane another decade for a fraction of a tear-off.

We book the inspection, usually inside a week, and we give you a two-hour window rather than "Tuesday". If you have water coming in right now, say it in the first sentence and we will move you.

The inspection, 40 to 60 minutes, free
We go up. You do not have to be home, though people usually want to be. We chalk test squares, photograph everything with a scale in frame, check the soft metal and the vents, and look at the decking from the attic where there is access. Then you get the photos and a written, itemised scope with real numbers on it. Not a range scribbled on a business card. If we think you should not file a claim, we will say that too.

The work, usually one to two days
Tear-off, decking inspection and any replacement, ice-and-water at the eaves and valleys, synthetic underlayment, new flashings and boots because reusing them is how leaks come back, then the roof itself and the ridge vent. Magnets over the drive and lawn twice at the end. We pull the permit and we meet the inspector. You get the manufacturer warranty registration in writing, not a promise that we filed it.
There is no pressure step in that list because we did not put one in. If you want to sit with the estimate for three weeks and get two more, do that. Good work is still there in three weeks.
One roof off Kearney Street, before and after
A 1978 ranch north of Kearney, about two miles from where the weather office measured four inch hail. The owner had been told by a door-knocker that the whole thing was "shot" and by her own eyes that it looked fine. Both were wrong in different directions.
Before
- Bruising across the north and west slopes at roughly nine hits per test square, mat exposed where granules had been driven off.
- Gutter aprons and the furnace flue cap dented hard enough to read from the ladder, which is what carried the claim.
- Two sheets of decking soft at the north valley from an older leak nobody had found, which would have been paid for out of pocket if we had not opened it.
- Original 1978 ridge with no vent at all, so the attic was running hot enough to age the new shingles early.
After
- Full tear-off to deck, two sheets of decking replaced, ice-and-water at all eaves and valleys, synthetic underlayment throughout.
- Architectural shingles with new step and counter flashing at the chimney rather than the old reused stuff.
- Continuous ridge vent cut in and the blocked soffit baffles cleared, so the attic finally moves air.
- Day and a half on site, permit pulled and inspected, and the recoverable depreciation released by her carrier eleven days after we sent the completion certificate.
Repair or replace: how do you tell which one you are actually in?
Replace when the damage is general, repair when it is local. That is the whole rule, and it is more useful than any age cutoff. A roof with forty cracked shingles clustered around one chimney is a repair even at eighteen years old. A roof with six hail bruises per test square spread evenly across three slopes is a replacement even at nine years old, because you cannot patch a surface that is failing everywhere at once. The three things that push a borderline roof over the line are brittleness, which means walking on it to repair it creates new damage; general granule loss, where the mat is showing across whole planes rather than in spots; and soft decking, which turns a roofing job into a carpentry job whether you like it or not.
How long should an asphalt roof last in southwest Missouri?
Plan on 18 to 22 years for architectural shingles here, not the 30 or 50 printed on the wrapper. Those numbers come from a laboratory, and the Ozarks are not one. What shortens a roof in Greene County is the combination we get every year: hail, wide temperature swings across a single February day, high summer attic temperatures on badly ventilated houses, and the freeze-thaw cycling that works water into any flashing detail that is not sealed properly. Three-tab shingles run shorter, more like 14 to 18 years. A properly vented attic is the single biggest thing you control, and it is cheap compared to the roof.
Is impact-resistant shingle worth the extra money in a hail market?
In this county, usually yes, and the reason is the insurance discount more than the shingle. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are tested by dropping a two inch steel ball on them, and most Missouri carriers give a premium credit for them, often five to fifteen percent on the wind and hail portion. Over a twenty year roof that credit frequently covers the upgrade on its own. What Class 4 will not do is survive four inch hail. Nothing on the residential market survives four inch hail. What it does is turn the 1.5 to 2 inch storms, which are the ones we actually get most years, into a non-event instead of a claim.
Should you take the insurance money and skip the work?
You can, and it usually costs you more than it saves. On a replacement cost policy the insurer pays the depreciated amount first and holds back the recoverable depreciation until the work is finished and a completion certificate is submitted. Skip the work and you keep the first cheque and forfeit the second, which on a fifteen year old roof is often the larger of the two. There is also the next claim to think about: an insurer who paid for a roof that never got replaced will not pay for it twice, and some carriers will exclude the roof or non-renew you. If money is the problem, say so out loud when we write the estimate. Phasing the work is a normal conversation and we would rather have it than watch someone sit on a cheque.
Questions we get asked most
How do I know if my roof actually has hail damage?
You mostly cannot tell from the ground, which is the whole problem. Hail bruising on an asphalt shingle looks like a dark, slightly soft circle where the granules have been knocked loose and the mat underneath is exposed. From the driveway it reads as nothing. From four feet away on the roof it is obvious. The faster tell is the soft metal on the property: gutters, downspouts, furnace flue caps, the aluminium wrap on a garage door, the top of an air conditioner. Soft metal dents at a smaller hail size than shingles bruise, so if the AC condenser fins are dimpled, the roof is worth a proper look. We do that look for free and we will tell you when the answer is no.
My neighbour got a whole new roof and my claim got denied. How?
Because the hail on April 28, 2026 was not evenly distributed, and the difference between one street and the next was real. The National Weather Service logged 4.75 inch hail near Bois D'Arc and 4.00 inch at the weather office in northwest Springfield that morning, but out in Ozark the reports that afternoon were 1.00 inch. One inch dents gutters and rarely fractures a shingle mat. Four inch hail goes through decking. Two houses eight miles apart genuinely had two different storms, and an adjuster who denies the smaller one is not necessarily wrong. What is worth doing is checking whether your roof took damage from an earlier storm that never got claimed.
Is it legal for a roofer to cover my deductible?
No. Missouri outlawed it in 2011 and tightened the language in 2014. RSMo 407.725 bars a contractor from advertising or promising to pay or rebate any part of your insurance deductible, and the statute defines that broadly enough to catch the workarounds: an allowance, a discount against the fee, a gift card, a referral fee, a "storm credit". A violation is an unfair practice under the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act. If somebody offers, that is a free preview of how they will treat everything else on your job.
Why is my hail deductible $6,000 when I thought it was $1,000?
Because a lot of Missouri carriers quietly moved wind and hail onto a percentage deductible, and the percentage is of your dwelling coverage limit, not of the claim. Two percent of a $300,000 dwelling limit is $6,000 out of your pocket before the policy pays a cent. It is on the declarations page, usually one line, usually not the line anybody reads. Check it before you decide whether to file, because on a small Ozark or Rogersville claim the deductible can be larger than the repair.
What does a new roof cost in Springfield right now?
A straightforward tear-off and asphalt shingle replacement on a 2,000 square foot roof in Springfield lands somewhere between $8,500 and $13,400, which works out to roughly $175 to $550 per square depending on pitch, layers, decking condition and shingle line. How long is the wait for a roof after the April storm?
Longer than normal and getting better. A Springfield roof replacement is usually four to six weeks from the storm to the last nail, counting the claim. Since April 28 the realistic number has been eight to fourteen weeks, because every crew in Greene County is booked, the adjusters are buried and the permit desk at 840 Boonville is stacked. Inspections we can do inside about a week. If your roof is actively leaking, say so when you call and we will get a tarp on it before we do anything else.
Do I need a permit to reroof my house?
Inside Springfield city limits, yes. Reroofing is permitted work through Building Development Services, and we pull it, not you. Outside the city it depends where you are. A house in Willard or out toward Bois D'Arc falls under different rules than one on Kearney Street, and unincorporated Greene County is different again. We will tell you which one applies to your address before we quote, because the permit is a real line item and we would rather you see it than find it.
Can you just repair it instead of replacing the whole roof?
Often, yes, and we would rather. A dozen cracked shingles around a Battlefield chimney or a failed pipe boot is a repair, not a $12,000 event. Repair stops making sense in three situations: the shingles are brittle enough that walking on them creates new damage, the granule loss is general rather than local so the mat is exposed across whole slopes, or the decking underneath has gone soft.
