Willard was as close to the worst of it as anywhere in Greene County
The National Weather Service logged 4.00 inch hail five miles south-southeast of Willard at 11:45 a.m., with a 1.75 inch report from the same area four minutes later as the core moved through. The single largest hailstone of the entire event, 4.75 inches, came down five miles southeast of Bois D’Arc at 11:43, which is essentially the same neighbourhood. For scale, the NWS described that stone as larger than a grapefruit and about the size of a CD.
Four inch hail is a different category of event. It does not leave bruises to be counted in a test square. It fractures shingles outright, splits decking, wrecks ridge caps, destroys vent housings and puts visible dents in 26 gauge metal. Around Willard, the question this spring has rarely been whether there is a claim. It has been how quickly it can be done.
The thing about Willard nobody tells you
Willard is not in Springfield city limits, and that has a specific consequence right now. Springfield licenses its contractors and publishes a free business licence search so you can check one before you sign. That search has no jurisdiction over a crew working solely in Willard, and Missouri has no state roofing licence to fall back on, because there is no state roofing licence at all. Unincorporated Greene County has less oversight again.
Storm-chase operations know this precisely as well as we do, and it is why the concentration of out-of-state door-knockers after April 28 was heavier in the smaller towns north and west of Springfield than inside the city. Ask anybody at your door for their certificate of liability insurance by email today, ask whether their contract contains the detachable NOTICE OF CANCELLATION form Missouri requires on insurance-funded work, and ask whether they are offering to cover your deductible. If the answer to the last one is yes, that offer is illegal under RSMo 407.725.
What we are seeing on Willard roofs
Whole-roof replacements rather than slope-by-slope claims, in the main. Beyond the shingles, the damage list on a Willard house this spring usually includes gutters and downspouts, the aluminium wrap on garage doors and windows, the AC condenser fins, roof vent housings cracked outright, and skylight domes. Out on the acreage properties toward Bois D’Arc and along MO-160 there is a lot of exposed-fastener metal on shops, barns and equipment sheds, and that is where the cosmetic damage exclusion conversation comes up: the panel is dented and still watertight, and whether your policy pays depends on a clause most people have never read. We flag it before you file rather than after.
Willard runs its own permitting, and properties outside the city limits go through Greene County Resource Management. Different process, different fee, and not the Springfield one. We handle it either way and we will tell you which one applies to your address before you see a number.
Getting scheduled
Willard is ten minutes up MO-160 from the shop, so travel is not the constraint. Capacity has been. If your roof is open, tarped, or letting water in, say that when you ring and you move to the front of the queue. If it is a straightforward inspection, we are currently about a week out.

Willard roofing questions
How can I check a roofer if Willard has no licence search?
Ask for the certificate of liability insurance and ring the number on it to confirm it is live, not just that the paper exists. Check whether they hold a City of Springfield licence anyway, since most legitimate operators working this area do. Look for a physical local address rather than a PO box, and check that their contract contains the detachable NOTICE OF CANCELLATION form Missouri requires.
My metal shop roof is dented but not leaking. Will insurance pay?
Depends entirely on whether your policy carries a cosmetic damage exclusion for metal roofing, which many now do. Read that clause before you file. If it is excluded, a functional dented panel is yours to live with, and there is an argument for leaving it and putting the money toward the house instead.
Is 4 inch hail damage always a full replacement?
Usually, on shingle. At that size the damage tends to be general across every slope that faced the storm, and you cannot patch a surface that is failing everywhere at once. On metal it is more often cosmetic than functional, which is a different conversation entirely.
