Strafford sat on the eastern shoulder of the track
The supercell crossed from Greene into Webster and Dallas counties north and east of Springfield, and Strafford was close enough to the edge to have caught the fringe rather than the core. There is no large hail report for the town itself in the NWS record for April 28, 2026, though there are 1.50 to 2.00 inch reports scattered north and east toward Elkland and the Bassville area. If your roof took something, it is more likely to be marginal bruising or wind than the catastrophic damage Willard and Republic saw, which makes an honest hit count in a chalked test square worth more here than almost anywhere.
An interstate town roofs differently
Strafford’s position on I-44 has given it a commercial and light-industrial base out of proportion to its population: truck-serving businesses, distribution and storage, contractor yards, and a lot of pre-engineered metal buildings. That means our work here splits differently than in a purely residential town.
- Standing seam and exposed-fastener metal on commercial buildings. Long spans, open purlins, and thermal movement that a residential crew will underestimate. Fastener pull-through and failed closures are the usual finds.
- Low-slope single-ply on the retail and service buildings. TPO and EPDM where hail damage is genuinely invisible from standing height and shows up on your knees with low-angle light. See the commercial page.
- Re-screwing. The neoprene washers on exposed-fastener metal age out at fifteen to twenty years regardless of weather. On a large shop or warehouse this is the single cheapest thing you can do to postpone a replacement.
- Residential work, which is the ordinary mix of replacement, leak repair and ventilation, on a housing stock that runs from older small-town houses near the centre to newer builds on the edges.
Wind on an exposed corridor
The land along I-44 through Strafford is open, and wind matters here. Creased shingles with broken seal strips, lifted ridge caps and rake-edge uplift are all things we find on Strafford roofs after fronts that did nothing dramatic enough to make the news. Six nails per shingle, purpose-made starter strip at rakes as well as eaves, and proper drip edge are what make the difference, and they are the three items a cheap quote quietly leaves out.
Greene County, not Springfield city
Strafford is its own municipality with its own permitting, and the unincorporated land around it falls under Greene County Resource Management. Not the Springfield process, and the Springfield contractor licence search has no jurisdiction here. On commercial work the permitting and code questions are more involved, particularly around required insulation R-value on a full membrane replacement, and that belongs in the budget conversation early rather than as a surprise.
Scheduling
Strafford is fifteen minutes east on I-44 and inside the no-surcharge area. On commercial buildings we will core the roof, photograph what we find and give you a written condition assessment with a service-life estimate, free, whether or not you buy anything.

Strafford roofing questions
Do you do metal building roofs, not just houses?
Yes. Pre-engineered metal buildings, long-span exposed-fastener panel, standing seam retrofits over failing panel, re-screwing, closures and trim. It is a solid share of what we do along this corridor.
How do I know if my flat commercial roof took hail?
You do not, from the ground or from a doorway. Hail fractures a single-ply membrane in a way that only shows on hands and knees with light raking across the surface. If April went over your building it is worth an hour of somebody’s time.
What does re-screwing a shop roof cost?
It scales with panel area and screw spacing and it is a small fraction of a replacement. Worth doing on any exposed-fastener roof around the fifteen to twenty year mark, because the washers fail long before the steel does.
