Webster County was on the storm track

The NWS lists Webster among the seven counties the left-moving supercell crossed on April 28, 2026: Barry, Lawrence, Christian, Greene, Dallas, Webster, Laclede and on into Camden. Reports in the Marshfield area ran around 1.50 inch, with 2.00 inch reports at Elkland to the west and 1.50 inch further along at Bennett Springs and Lebanon. Golf-ball hail is the size where damage depends heavily on the condition of the roof it lands on. A five-year-old architectural shingle often shrugs it off. A nineteen-year-old three-tab does not.

The thing about Marshfield is the wind

Marshfield sits at around 1,500 feet, on one of the higher points along I-44 between Springfield and Lebanon, and it is exposed in a way the towns down in the Springfield plateau are not. Straight-line wind events matter here, and wind damage is the most under-claimed roof damage there is, because it does not look like anything.

• Creased shingles. A tab that has been folded back by wind and laid down again has a broken seal strip. It has failed. It is sitting flat on your roof looking perfectly normal and it will lift in the next gust.
• Rake and eave edges. Wind uplift starts at the edges, which is why the starter course and drip edge matter more here than they do in a sheltered spot, and why they are the two items cheap jobs skip.
• Ridge caps. First thing off in a high-wind event and the easiest thing to spot from the ground with binoculars.
• Nail count. Four nails per shingle meets the manufacturer’s low-wind instruction. Six is the high-wind spec and it is what we do everywhere, and on an exposed ridge site it is not optional.

What we see on Marshfield roofs

A mix. The town square and the older streets around it have a lot of period housing with steep cut-up roofs, and out along the county roads it is acreage, shops and metal. The newer development along the US-38 and I-44 corridors is straightforward subdivision work. The commercial side matters too: the interchange businesses, the truck-serving properties and the light industrial buildings mostly have low-slope membrane roofs, and hail damage on single-ply is genuinely invisible from standing height. That gets inspected on hands and knees with low-angle light or it does not get inspected.

Webster County, its own rules

Marshfield runs its own building department and unincorporated Webster County is different again. Neither is Springfield’s process and the Springfield licence search has no reach here. Same advice as everywhere outside the city: certificate of liability insurance emailed the same day, a verifiable local address, and a contract containing the detachable NOTICE OF CANCELLATION form Missouri requires on insurance-funded roofing work.
