Battlefield sat on the southern edge of the swath
The NWS logged 2.50 inch hail six miles north-northwest of Battlefield at 11:46 a.m. and 1.75 inch four miles north-northeast at 11:45. That puts the town right on the southern shoulder of the main corridor, which produces the most annoying possible outcome: real damage on some streets and almost none on others, sometimes within half a mile. Tennis-ball hail bruises shingle mats comprehensively. An inch and three quarters, on a roof in good condition, often does not.
Which is why Battlefield has more genuinely borderline claims than anywhere else we work. We have written both "this is a clear claim" and "do not file this" on the same street this summer, and both were right.
The pitch problem
Battlefield is a newer town than most of its neighbours, and its housing reflects the era it was built in: two-storey homes on generous lots with steep front gables, multiple planes, dormers and a lot of roof area relative to floor area. Three things follow.
- Steep roofs cost more to work on. Anything past about 8:12 needs staging, fall protection and slower working. That is a genuine 25 to 40 percent on labour, and it is not a contractor being opportunistic.
- Steep roofs are harder to assess from the ground, and easier for a door-knocker to make claims about that you cannot check.
- Complex roofs have more failure points. Valleys, dead valleys behind dormers, roof-to-wall transitions and headwall flashings are where the leaks come from, and they are also where a rushed post-storm crew cuts corners because those details take time.
The upside of newer housing is that decking is sheet material in decent condition, the framing is engineered, and most of these roofs are on their first or second covering rather than their fourth. Battlefield tear-offs go faster than Aurora ones.
HOAs, which matter here more than elsewhere
Several of the subdivisions off FF and along the Battlefield Road corridor have covenants covering roof colour and material. Check the approved palette before you commit to something, because a re-do is entirely on you. It also means Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are worth raising early, since they come in the same architectural profiles and colours the covenants already approve, so upgrading rarely requires an approval conversation.
Greene County, not Springfield city
Battlefield is its own municipality with its own permitting, and unincorporated stretches around it fall under Greene County Resource Management. Not the Springfield process. We handle the permit and we will tell you which jurisdiction your address is in before we quote.
What we would do if it were our house
Get the free inspection, get the report, and then look hard at your declarations page before filing. If you are on a two percent wind and hail deductible with a $350,000 dwelling limit, that is $7,000 out of pocket, and a marginal 1.75 inch claim on a sound roof is not going to clear it usefully. If the inspection shows genuine general bruising, file. That distinction is worth a free hour of somebody’s time.

Battlefield roofing questions
Why did my neighbour's claim get approved and mine did not?
On the southern edge of a hail swath, half a mile is a real difference. The reports around Battlefield ranged from 1.75 to 2.50 inches within a few miles of each other. That is the gap between a roof that is bruised across every slope and one that took a handful of marginal hits.
Does a steep roof really cost that much more?
Yes. Past about 8:12 a crew cannot walk it freely, which means staging, harnesses and roughly half the productivity. It is one of the three biggest cost drivers on a Battlefield job, along with the number of planes and the decking.
Will Class 4 shingles pass my HOA?
Almost always, because they come in the same architectural profiles and colour ranges as standard shingles. The covenant usually governs appearance, not construction. Worth confirming in writing before you order.
