Roof replacement on a home in Clever, Christian County Missouri

Clever sat on an edge, which is the awkward place to be

The storm reports either side of Clever on April 28, 2026 tell the story. Billings, six miles west, recorded 2.75 inch hail in town at 11:35 a.m. and 3.00 inch four miles northwest at 11:44. Republic, eight miles north, took 3.25 inch twice. But three miles west-northwest of Nixa, eight miles east, the report was 1.75 inch, and Nixa itself was an inch.

Clever is between those, and the practical consequence is that damage here varies genuinely street by street. That is not us hedging; it is what the edge of a hail swath does. Some Clever roofs have general bruising across every west-facing slope. Some, half a mile away, have almost nothing. The only way to know is to have somebody count hits in a chalked square on your roof.

A small town with a lot of new roofs and a lot of old ones

Clever has grown quickly for its size, so the housing splits fairly sharply into two groups. The newer subdivision housing built since about 2005 has roofs that are 15 to 20 years old, mostly architectural shingle, on sheet decking, single layer, straightforward to work on and right at the point where hail damage on top of age tips the decision. The older core has smaller mid-century and earlier houses with the usual older-town issues: multiple layers, board decking here and there, and frequently no ventilation at all.

Between the two, we have written far more replacement scopes in the first group and far more repair-and-ventilate scopes in the second.

Christian County, and the verification gap

Clever is in Christian County and runs its own permitting; unincorporated areas around it are county. Neither is the Springfield process, and the City of Springfield’s contractor licence search has no jurisdiction out here. With no state roofing licence in Missouri at all, checking a contractor in a town this size comes down to the certificate of liability insurance, a verifiable local address, and whether their contract carries the detachable NOTICE OF CANCELLATION form the statute requires on insurance-funded work.

Small towns on the edge of a hail swath get a specific kind of visitor: the crew that has worked the obvious damage in Republic and Willard and is now looking for marginal claims further out. Be particularly careful about anyone enthusiastic about your borderline roof.

Booking

Clever is about twenty-five minutes southwest of the shop, straight down MO-14. No travel surcharge, free inspection, written report either way. If a few neighbours want looking at on the same afternoon, say so when you ring; it is easier for everybody.

Clever roofing questions

Why does my neighbour have damage and I do not?

Because Clever sat on the edge of the core. Between Billings at three inches and Nixa at one, the gradient is steep, and half a mile genuinely changes the answer. It is the most common question we get in this town and it is not a sign that anybody is being unfair.

Is a borderline claim worth filing?

Work out your actual deductible first. If you are on a percentage wind and hail deductible, two percent of a $280,000 dwelling limit is $5,600, and a marginal claim will not clear that usefully. We will tell you the honest hit count from the test squares and you can decide.

Do you come out to Clever for a repair, not just a replacement?

Yes, though a small repair a long way out is dominated by the call-out, so it is worth bundling anything else you need doing into the same visit.
