Farmhouse and outbuilding roofs damaged by giant hail near Ash Grove MO

The biggest hail of the event fell next door

At 11:43 a.m. on April 28, 2026, a trained spotter measured a 4.75 inch hailstone five miles southeast of Bois D’Arc, which puts it in the country between Ash Grove and Willard. The National Weather Service described it as larger than a grapefruit and about the size of a CD. It was the largest stone recorded anywhere in the event and it broke Greene County’s 75-year hail size record by nearly two full inches. Four inch hail was measured five miles south-southeast of Willard two minutes later.

Hail at that size is not a bruising event. It splits shingles, cracks decking, destroys vent housings and ridge caps, and dents metal panel visibly. Around here, the question this year has not been whether there is damage.

Rural property is a different job

Ash Grove and the country around it is acreage rather than subdivision, and that changes what a storm claim actually covers.

Storm chasers concentrate out here

Springfield’s licence search does not cover Ash Grove. Neither does anything else, because Missouri has no state roofing licence. The practical result is that after a storm this size, the density of out-of-state door-knockers is highest exactly where verification is hardest. If somebody turns up:

We come out here

Ash Grove is twenty minutes northwest on MO-266 and there is no travel surcharge. If you have a house and two outbuildings, we will inspect all of them in one visit and document them separately, because they are separate line items on your claim and they get treated as such.

Ash Grove roofing questions

Will my policy cover the barn as well as the house?

Usually yes, under other structures coverage, though the limit is typically a percentage of your dwelling limit and it may not be enough for a large agricultural building. Farm policies work differently again. Check the limit before you assume, and make sure the outbuildings are on the estimate at all.

My metal shop roof is covered in dents but does not leak. Is that a claim?

Only if your policy does not exclude cosmetic damage to metal roofing, and many do. It is one clause on the policy and it decides the whole question. We will look at the panel and tell you honestly whether the denting is cosmetic or whether there is fastener pull-through and deformation, which is functional damage.

Do I need a permit out here?

Often not, on rural and agricultural structures in unincorporated Greene County. That does not mean the work should be done to a lower standard, and it does mean there is nobody inspecting the crew you hired. Choose accordingly.
