What to do in the next ten minutes, before we get there

None of this is difficult and all of it reduces what you are dealing with tomorrow.

   Get the water into a container, not into the ceiling

   Buckets under the drip, towels around them. If the ceiling is bulging and holding water, put a bucket underneath and pierce the centre of the bulge with a screwdriver to let it drain. That feels wrong and it is right: a controlled hole beats a collapsed ceiling across your floor.

   Move what matters and cover what cannot move

   Electronics, papers, rugs. Plastic sheeting or bin bags over furniture that is too heavy to shift.

   Kill the power to that area if water is anywhere near wiring

   If water is running near a ceiling fixture, a recessed light or an outlet, switch that circuit off at the panel. Do not stand in water to do it.

   Photograph everything as it happens

   The ceiling, the buckets, the standing water, the damaged contents. Timestamped, before you clean up. This is what your contents claim is made of and nobody can reconstruct it later.

   Stay off the roof

   Please. A wet roof in the dark, in a storm, is how people end up in Cox South. It is our job and we are insured for it.

What we do when we arrive

An emergency call is not a repair, it is a stop. We find the entry point, get a proper tarp on it, and get it fastened so it survives the rest of the weather rather than flapping off at three in the morning. Tarping done properly means the tarp runs over the ridge where the damage allows, battened down with furring strips rather than nailed through the field, and edges secured so wind cannot get under it. A tarp thrown on with a few bricks is not a tarp, it is a sail.

Then we come back and do the actual repair when the weather and, if there is one, your claim allow. Emergency work you acknowledge in writing as necessary is specifically carved out of the cancellation provisions in Missouri’s roofing statute, so it is normal for it to be a separate, small, itemised bill.

We are not going to pretend everything is urgent so we can charge for it.

After the storm season, when everyone is booked

Since April 28, 2026 the whole county has been at capacity, and honest scheduling matters more than usual. We keep emergency slots open every day and we do not fill them with routine work, which is why we can usually tarp same or next day even while inspections run a week out. If we cannot get to you in a timeframe that protects your house, we will say so on the phone and tell you who else to try. That costs us a job occasionally and it beats leaving somebody with a bucket and a promise.

Storm season here, so you know what is coming

Southwest Missouri’s severe window is April through June, with a smaller second peak in late autumn. Greene County sits in one of Missouri’s most hail-active zones, and the pattern we saw on April 28, a fast-moving supercell producing very large hail over a narrow corridor, is the local signature. Winter brings a different problem: ice at the eaves on badly ventilated attics, and the occasional heavy wet snow load on low-slope and porch roofs. Both are on the maintenance page.

Questions about emergency roof repair

Do you charge extra at night or on a Sunday?

There is an after-hours rate and we will tell you what it is on the phone before we get in the truck. What we will not do is discover it once we are on your drive at eleven at night.

Will my insurance cover the tarp?

Usually, yes. Most policies require you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage, and emergency mitigation is normally covered. Keep the itemised invoice and the photographs.

How long can a tarp stay on?

A properly fastened tarp will hold for a few weeks. It is not a season. UV degrades the material and every windy day works at the fixings, so treat it as a bridge to the repair rather than a solution.

What if the leak is coming from something other than the roof?

It happens more than you would think, and we will tell you rather than tarping a sound roof. Condensation on a poorly vented attic, a failed bathroom fan duct, an ice dam, or a plumbing leak in a wall all present as a ceiling stain. That diagnosis is free too.
