Fair Grove caught the storm on its way northeast
By the time the supercell reached northern Greene County it had already produced its record stone, but it was still severe. The NWS logged 2.00 inch hail one mile north of Fair Grove at 12:04 p.m. and 1.75 inch in town at the same minute. Two miles north-northeast of Elkland, further along the track, the report was 2.00 inch at 12:11, and three miles west-southwest of Elkland 2.00 inch at 12:09.
Two inch hail is hen-egg sized. It bruises asphalt shingle comprehensively on the slopes facing it, it dents soft metal hard, and it will visibly dimple 26 gauge steel panel. It sits right in the band where a sound roof takes real damage and a tired roof is finished.
This is metal roof country
Fair Grove is acreage and small holdings more than subdivisions, and that means a much higher proportion of exposed-fastener metal than we see closer in: shop roofs, barns, equipment sheds, carports, and a fair number of houses too. Metal changes the whole conversation.
- Dented is not failed. A dented steel panel is generally still watertight, which is the good news and also the problem, because many policies now carry a cosmetic damage exclusion for metal roofing that lets the carrier decline to pay for denting that does not affect function. Find that clause before you file.
- What is functional damage: fastener pull-through where the screw has torn its hole, panel deformation at the eave or the ridge, split seams, and damaged closures. None of that is visible from the ground.
- The screws are the service item anyway. Neoprene washers on exposed fasteners age out at fifteen to twenty years regardless of hail, and re-screwing a shop roof is a cheap job that prevents an expensive one.
- Outbuildings are separate line items. They get left off first estimates constantly. Every structure on the property gets inspected and documented separately so nothing disappears.
Permitting and oversight out here
Fair Grove is a small municipality in northern Greene County, and much of the surrounding area is unincorporated and falls under Greene County Resource Management. Agricultural structures often sit outside the permitting regime altogether. That is convenient and it means there is nobody checking the crew you hired, which matters a great deal in a year like this one. Springfield’s licence search does not reach up here, and Missouri has no state roofing licence, so the certificate of liability insurance and a real local address are what you have to work with.
Long drives, honest scheduling
Fair Grove is about twenty-five minutes north on US-65. We come out, there is no surcharge, and we would rather inspect the house and every outbuilding in one visit than make three trips. If you have a barn or a shop, mention it when you ring so we bring the right kit.

Fair Grove roofing questions
Is my dented metal roof a claim?
It depends on one clause in your policy. If there is a cosmetic damage exclusion for metal roofing, denting that does not affect function will not be paid. If there is not, it usually is. Separately, we look for fastener pull-through and panel deformation, which is functional damage and is a different argument entirely.
Do you work on barns and shop buildings?
Yes. Long-span exposed-fastener panel, purlin work, re-screwing, closures, ridge and eave trim. It is a decent share of what we do north and west of Springfield.
How much is a re-screw on a shop roof?
It depends on panel area and screw spacing, and it is a fraction of a replacement. Worth doing at fifteen to twenty years whether or not there has been hail, because the neoprene washers are what fail first on any exposed-fastener roof.
